African Institute for Remittances (AIR)

An initiative of the African Union

The establishment of the African Institute for Remittances is an initiative of the African Union Commission and its member states in collaboration with the World Bank and selected development partners (The European Commission, African Development Bank and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The AIR is anchored within the African Union Commission. The African Institute for Remittances (AIR) was launched in Kenya at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies on 28th November, 2014. Preparations are currently underway to operationalize the Institute.

The core objective of AIR is to develop capacity of the member states of the African Union, remittance senders and recipients and other stakeholders to implement concrete strategies and operational instruments to use remittances as development tools for poverty reduction.

The main objectives of the AIR are:

  • Providing technical assistance to government institutions on putting in place the necessary regulatory frameworks
  • Carrying out training and capacity training programs of relevant institutions and organizations.
  • Studying remittances flows within Africa
  • Conducting policy research and dialogue and sharing information on how remittances contribute to the development of African Countries
