COMESA

Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa

The decision to establish the institute was made following the 13th Meeting of the COMESA Committee of Governors of Central Banks held in Cairo, Egypt. This decision was ratified by the Council of Ministers. The institute became operational on March 7, 2011, in Nairobi, Kenya.

The core mandate of CMI is to undertake technical, policy, statistical, institutional, and legal preparatory work with the goal of creating the COMESA Monetary Union (CMU).

The primary objective of CMI is to establish and maintain macroeconomic stability in COMESA member countries.

The key objectives of CMI are to:

  • Promote macroeconomic policy coordination and financial integration in member countries;
  • Advance research activities on monetary and financial integration issues;
  • Assist the COMESA integration agenda by supporting COMESA initiatives on investment and trade competitiveness;
  • Collect and disseminate information on macroeconomic and financial sector developments of member countries and;
  • Facilitate other activities in the area of harmonization and coordination of macroeconomic policies which are in line with the COMESA Treaty.
